Lundy: Shipwreck and Rescue by Robert Carl Smith | |
The island of Lundy is a three-mile long granite mass set across what was one of the world’s busiest shipping routes in the nineteenth century. Not surprisingly, it has a long history of shipwrecks. This book tells the stories not just of the ships and how they came to grief on and near Lundy’s shores, but also of the rescue efforts to save vessels and crews. The author has gone back to original sources and covers shipwrecks from the eighteenth century to the end of the twentieth century. Contemporary newspaper accounts and adverts bring the stories to life. Additional sections provide context, both nationally and in the unique circumstances of Lundy. 84 pages with illustrations and index.
